Hackled Compower Dun Fly Tying Recipe
Hook: Tiemco 100 or 103BL
Thread: 8/0 black
Tail: Moose body
Wing: Top quality deer hair (not costal)
Hackle: Dyed brown grizzly
Body & Head: muskrat dubbing
Tying Tips
- The above recipe uses a gray muskrat body and brown grizzly hackle and is a good general searching pattern. Vary your size and colors to match the hatch you’re fishing.
- This pattern can be tied without the hackle. It will be more imitative but won’t float quite as well.
- Regarding the choice of hooks, the Tiemco 103BL is lighter but not as strong as the 100. I prefer the 103BL because I want to give this fly every chance to float well.
- It’s important to use top-quality deer hair. Look for hair with very short black tips. Use more hair than you would for a Comparadun.
- Notice the distinct head in front of the wing. Don’t crowd the head of this fly.
- Be sure to consult the Compower Dun tying instructions to properly tie air bubble into moose tail.
- Change body color and size to match naturals. This pattern can be used to imitate any hatching mayfly.

Tips for Fishing the Compower Dun
- Fish dead drifted.
- Because the tail and wing construction provide more floatation than the standard Comparadun, this pattern can be fished in much heavier water without sinking.
- If properly tied, with plenty of hair for the wing, this pattern is quite easy to see in heavy glare, which is fortunate since that is when some of the best mayfly hatches occur.
